The Riversong Short Story & Poetry Contest seeks to highlight unique voices in the short story genre, as well as a place for new and up-and-coming writers to showcase their talent in publication. The contest runs year around, with the collection of winners published in the fourth quarter of each year:
Deadline: September 15 each year
Word limit: 10,000 words
Genre and style: Any except erotica.
Entry fee: $29
Winners announced October 15 You may submit your story any time during the year—submissions after September 15 will be scheduled for the next year’s contest.
Submission Guidelines
- Submit your story at any time during the year via the official entry form.
- File Format: Microsoft Word (.docx) or Apple Pages document
Manuscript Preparation:
- Submit a polished, edited manuscript. Entries containing excessive typographical, grammatical, or formatting errors may be returned without review.
- Use minimal formatting, fonts, and sizing unless essential to the story.
- Recommended: Times New Roman 12-point (or equivalent), single-spaced with indented paragraphs (no extra line breaks between paragraphs).
- Place your name directly beneath the title.
Originality:
- The story must be your original work. Co-authored stories are permitted.
- Excerpts from larger works (e.g., novel chapters) are eligible. If selected as a winner and previously published elsewhere, the other publication must include attribution and a link to the Riversong Contest and Sulis International Press.
Review Process
- Entries undergo blind review by a panel of editors, bloggers, writers, and publishers, judged solely on content and writing quality.
- Standout stories typically demonstrate originality in voice, plot, storytelling, and literary craft.
- All winners will be notified privately. Selected stories will be published in the annual Riversong anthology released in the fourth quarter.
