In the past, pretty much the only way to publish your book was to get a traditional publisher to accept it. But, as we all know, the publishing landscape has changed, and self-published books now can be seen to be just “as good as” a traditionally published book.
Bernadette Geyer’s article on Funds for Writers notes the same for book awards. When she first began collecting information on book awards, one of the eligibility requirements was that it be published by a traditional publisher. Now, however, their are many awards for self-published authors. Here is her list:
- North Street Book Prize
- The Foreword Reviews INDIEFAB Book of the Year Awards
- The Eric Hoffer Award for Independent Books
- Debut-litzer Prizes
- Thorpe Menn Literary Excellence Award
- American Book Awards
- Minnesota Book Awards
- Brockman-Campbell Book Award
- Lambda Literary Awards
- Hurston/Wright Legacy Award
