Over at Writer’s Digest, D.M. King has written this guest post on The Writer’s Dig. Addressing the issue that perfect first drafts are extremely rare, King offers these six items to consider once you have finished your first draft.

  1. Sensory details.
  2. Beta Readers.
  3. Read it out loud.
  4. Pick up a novel in your genre and read it.
  5. Set a time to begin editing.
  6. The pay off.

It’s often difficult to know where to begin once we have finished the first draft, and revising and editing can seem daunting. These six things are good ways to begin the process of turning a first draft into a second, third, fourth…and so on.
