cover of Jone$town by Robert McDermott.

Matt Lowell’s sister thinks he’s cursed and the ghost of their brother TJ just won’t leave him alone, maybe because Matt killed him, but who knows?

Anyway, that was in the past, though Matt’s past, like unrequited love, has been buried alive. Nowadays Matt, a forty-something with an interest in serial killers and fragrances lives alone in his family home in a prestigious New Hampshire gated community nicknamed Jonestown. Matt tells us things that may or may not be true about Jonestown, stating early on that he is an unreliable narrator, but wouldn’t you if you had a past full of family dysfunction and secrets about murder and misadventure?

When Gene Hackman, Matt’s neighbour’s cat, goes missing it heralds the arrival of Beth Becker, a PI who likes muscle cars. Matt is blown away and soon they begin to unravel the mysteries of Jonestown while Matt simultaneously unravels the mysteries of why his past just won’t shut up and die.
